Premier League
All soccer players who want to improve their skills, techniques, and tactics should watch the best play, and one of the best and most accessible leagues to watch is the Premier League. By watching the Premier League, you can see the best players in the world play the modern style of soccer. For those who are new to watching this top-notch league, here is a brief overview:
The Premier League, also known as the English Premier League, or EPL, is the top division in English soccer. The season runs from August to May. There are 20 teams; each team plays the others twice, once at home and once away. At the end of 38 games, the team with the most points is the champion. But what makes the competition even more interesting is that the bottom 3 teams are relegated to the 2nd division, known as the English Football League (EFL) Championship, while the top three EFL Championship teams (determined through standings and playoffs) are promoted to the Premier League. Premier League teams such as Liverpool, Chelsea, Manchester City, Manchester United and Arsenal are known all over the world for their championship teams and dynamic, world class players.
While the Premier League is highly entertaining, you should watch Premier League matches as a student of the game; for example, if you play right back, watch and learn from the league’s best right backs, such as Manchester City’s, Kyle Walker, Tottenham’s Kieran Trippier and Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold. You can learn how the modern fullback has to make runs upfield and join the attack and deliver a great cross in addition to defending. By watching players in your specific position, you can see the responsibilities of that position from a variety of camera angles.
In the U.S., you can watch some Premier League matches on NBC, NBC Sports Network, and on the NBC Sports app. Spanish broadcasts are on Telemundo and NBC Universo. The NBC Sports Premier League Gold Pass offers more matches and exclusive content on a paid subscription basis. Highlights can be viewed on YouTube. No matter how you choose to watch Premier League, by watching on a regular basis, you can become a more knowledgeable and skillful soccer player. In my next post, I’ll highlight which Premier League teams to watch.
